What counts as adverse credit
Adverse credit covers a range of everyday situations, and none of them make you a lost cause:
- County Court Judgments (CCJs)
- Defaults on credit agreements
- Missed or late payments
- An Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA), or a discharged bankruptcy
- A thin or limited UK credit file, common if you are new to the country or have rarely borrowed
These are circumstances, not verdicts on who you are.
A past "no" is not a permanent no
High-street lenders tend to score by computer, so one blemish can end an application before a human ever looks at it. Specialist lenders work differently. They weigh the detail: how recent the issue was, how large, whether it has been settled, and how your finances look today. Older, smaller and settled issues are viewed very differently from recent, unsettled ones, and every case is judged on its own merits.
What affects how much you can borrow
The age and type of the credit issue, the size of your deposit, your income and affordability, and the overall picture since. A larger deposit often opens up more lenders and better rates. Time, and a clean recent history, count in your favour more than most people expect.

Every declined application can leave a mark, which is why applying to several lenders at once rarely helps. We check lenders’ criteria against your circumstances first, so you only apply where there is a realistic chance of a yes. It protects your credit file and your confidence.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a mortgage with a CCJ?
Often, yes, particularly if the CCJ is older, was for a smaller amount, or has been satisfied. Specialist lenders assess CCJs case by case rather than declining automatically.
How long after a default can I get a mortgage?
It varies by lender. Some will consider an application while a default is still on file, and more options and better rates usually open up as it ages and once it has been satisfied.
Will applying hurt my credit score?
It can, which is why we review lenders’ criteria and your options before any formal application. You only make a full application where you have a realistic chance of approval.
I have missed payments on my file. Is that a problem?
Missed payments are one of the most common forms of adverse credit, and on their own they rarely rule you out. What matters is how recent they are, how many, and the story behind them.
